Behind Me: an aesthetic dessert café with a tree-view window in Hoegi, Seoul

Behind Me (비하인드 미) is a moody, atmospheric dessert café in Hoegi, near Hoegi Station and Kyung Hee University, where modern furniture meets a vintage building and a big window frames a lit tree like a gallery piece. It is an easy recommendation if you want a quiet, photogenic café with serious dessert variety.

Where it is

Behind Me sits in Hoegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, near Hoegi Station and Kyung Hee University. Address: 125 Hoegi-ro, 1st floor. Hoegi has no shortage of cafés, but a friend recommended this one, and the moment you step inside it is obvious why they love it.

Opening hours

Open daily, 10:00 to 21:00, with last orders at 20:30.

What to order

The showcase is the fun part. Alongside cold-brew (dutch) coffee there were ruby-red cakes made with ruby red kiwi and strawberry cakes, gorgeous enough to catch your eye first. The macarons come in a huge range — salted milk, strawberry yogurt, mugwort chocolate, rocher chocolate, salted caramel, earl grey, blueberry cream cheese, choco vanilla, maple crème brûlée — all slightly plump and tempting. The butter bars are just as varied: earl grey orange, plain vanilla, choco chip, lemon, apple cinnamon, pistachio. There are financiers too — fig, apple cinnamon, pistachio — and my friend swears the financiers here are excellent.

For drinks we had an iced flat white and an iced coconut coffee. We chose the nutty bean, and you could immediately tell the beans were fresh. The flat white is the familiar, easy-to-love kind. The coconut coffee was the standout — usually these are sweetened with syrup, but here there was almost no sweetness, just the natural nutty richness of coconut. Less sweet meant cleaner and, to me, better. If you like the taste of coconut itself, order it.

The vibe

Inside is even more charming. The tables and chairs feel modern, but the building itself has a vintage mood, and the contrast works in an unexpectedly harmonious way — a different kind of charm from the usual “aesthetic” café. Toward the back there is a large window, and through the glass you can see a tree. I visited in the evening, and the tree lit up was genuinely beautiful — sitting and looking at it felt like admiring a piece in a museum. That seat was the most memorable part for me. Even more surprising: behind a big planter there is a door that leads to a hidden-feeling outdoor table area. I had no idea at first, and discovering it made the place feel even more special — a perfect spot for two people to talk quietly.

Verdict

Atmosphere, dessert, and coffee were all satisfying at Behind Me in Hoegi. It is the kind of place I want to return to when I want to spend time quietly. If you are looking for an aesthetic, low-key dessert café near Hoegi Station or Kyung Hee University, Behind Me is well worth the visit.
